About the program
The Indigenous-Led Data Research Projects Program funds innovative Indigenous-led approaches to improving data methodologies specific to missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people, including initiatives that:
- work to develop qualitative distinctions or identity-based indicators
- address existing methodological gaps for groups who are underserviced or underrepresented in data
- work to define safety through Indigenous ways of understanding
All of these will ultimately work to improve existing data and expand data related to missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people.
Who can apply
- Indigenous organizations, such as but not limited to:
- Indigenous women's and Indigenous 2SLGBTQI+ organizations
- urban or off-reserve Indigenous organizations
- Métis and non-status Indigenous organizations
- Inuit organizations
- Indigenous service providers
- Indigenous political or representative organizations
- First Nation communities, organizations and governments
- Tribal Councils
- Indigenous researchers affiliated with one of the entities outlined above
Deadlines
The deadline to submit a proposal for the 2022-2023 fiscal year was September 16th 2022.
How to apply
Eligible projects can be single year or multi-year. Applications must include:
- A completed Project or Workplan Funding Application form (PAW #638262)
- An itemized budget
- A short narrative (up to a maximum of 2,500 words) that clearly demonstrates how the proposed project will contribute to improving data, improving data methodologies or to better understanding safety for Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people
You can also include additional supporting documentation with your application form in other formats of your choosing.

Applicants that do not already have an established funding arrangement in place with the department may be asked to provide additional documentation.
