Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act: Engagement 2017-2018
Budget 2018 proposes to invest $5.5 million over two years to continue the Matrimonial Real Property Implementation Support Program, while supporting new and more targeted training and awareness activities.

Why
The purpose of this engagement is to receive feedback and advice on current implementation challenges of the act and new features that can help support the implementation of the act, which came into effect in 2013.
Who
Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, in partnership with the National Aboriginal Land Managers Association and the First Nation Lands Management Resource Centre will conduct the engagement.
It will include:
- national and regional Indigenous organizations
- First Nations who have passed or tried to pass community specific matrimonial real property laws
- other interested stakeholders
- provincial and territorial governments
The First Nation Lands Management Resource Centre will also host a session for:
- First Nations who have passed matrimonial real property laws as a component of their land code under the First Nation Land Management Regime
What
The engagement sessions will focus on new features or measures that could improve the implementation of the act (such as funding for votes, shelters).
They will have four themes asking what is needed from a:
- capacity perspective
- funding perspective
- implementation perspective
- dispute resolution perspective
